How will inmates become aware of this Diploma of Islamic Studies program?

The program will be introduced to the facility population by the local IOU Representative, Muslim Volunteer Chaplain, or the Facility Chaplain.  Broader announcement of the program will be via other communication means such as family referrals, written correspondence, websites, newspapers, and word of mouth when established.

Can anyone from any facility enter the program?

Yes, as long as a) the inmate meets the requirements of being violation-free for at least 3 months prior to registering,  b) he or she is not residing in a holding facility pending transfer or c) the inmate is not scheduled for release within one year.

Is the Diploma of Islamic Studies available for all inmates?

The program is not available to those inmates who have had disciplinary actions within 3 months of their registering.  However, inmates currently on death row or in lockup, may take the course on an individual basis.

How many inmates are allowed to participate in the program per facility?

While we will attempt to accommodate as many inmates per facility as possible, a limit of fifty (50) inmates will be allowed to enter the program per facility until such time as our resources allow for increased enrollment beyond this.

What conditions would apply in the event I start the program and encounter disciplinary actions?

Your progress will be placed on hold until 3 months after you complete your disciplinary sanction.

Who will facilitate/coordinate the program inside the facility?

Ideally, a Muslim Education Coordinator (Inmate) should be identified to run/coordinate the program in conjunction with the Facility Chaplain/Administration requirements.  Where there is a volunteer Muslim Chaplain available, he or she may do so in conjunction and under the supervision of the institutional chaplain.

How do I get an application?

The Facility/Muslim Chaplain should have copies available that were given to him/her by the IOU Representative or Volunteer Muslim Chaplain, and institutional Chaplain.  The inmate may also request an application from the Office of the Director of U.S. Operations for the Islamic Online University at P.O. Box 210162, Columbia, SC 29221-0162

When will the program start once my application is received?

You will be sent a letter of confirmation starting your enrollment in the program

When should I receive course materials after the letter of confirmation?

In approximately 2 – 4 weeks you will receive the course materials.

Who will the course materials be sent to?

Depending upon the facility, the course materials can be sent directly to the applicant, or to the Facility Chaplain.  Where there is an approved Volunteer Muslim Chaplain, he or she may receive the materials with prior institutional approval for distribution.  No materials will be sent to the individual inmate unless we are certain he/she will be able to receive them upon approval from the institution. Contact with the facility will be made to determine who materials can be sent to.

Will hard copies of the books be sent to the facility?

No, paper copies of the books will be sent through U.S. media mail.

Will access to the internet be needed?

No, access to the internet is not needed.

Are the inmates allowed to have group study sessions?

Yes, we do encourage group study sessions if permitted by the institution.

Where should the course materials be stored in the facility?

The materials should be stored in a location where it is accessible to the group, if there is group study.  Those inmates who receive materials for individual materials may keep the materials in his or her possession.

If it is determined that additional course materials are needed, what should be done?

If additional course materials are needed due to extenuating circumstances, the Muslim Education Coordinator, Volunteer Muslim Chaplain, or Facility Chaplain can request additional materials with reason provided via the national IOU Office at the Columbia SC address.

What are the consequences if someone is caught cheating in one way or another?

The person will be terminated from the program and not allowed to pursue the diploma for one year.

If I start the program while incarcerated and then I’m released, can I continue the program?

Yes, you can and the program will still be free for you. But you will need to contact the Columbia SC office to inform them on your new address.
